The rainbowfish are a family (Melanotaeniidae) of little, beautiful, freshwater angle found in northern and eastern Australia, New Guinea, islands in Cenderawasih Bay, and the Raja Ampat Islands in Indonesia.
The biggest rainbowfish family, Melanotaenia, gets from the antiquated Greek melano (dark) and taenia (joined).
Deciphered, it signifies "dark grouped", and is a reference to the regularly striking parallel dark groups that keep running along the assortments of those in the Melanotaenia variety.
